The private shipping company established in 1846 by Josef Fessler to inaugurate steamer services on this small lake in south-eastern Bavaria, continues in operation, with services from Prien-Stock and a number of other lakeside piers primarily to the islands of Herreninsel and Fraueninsel, although complete lake tours are offered. Herreninsel is the setting for the magnificent Herrenchiemsee Castle, built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria, to which tourists are conveyed by the small but well maintained motorised paddler Ludwig Fessler or one of the screw propelled motor cruisers of the fleet.

In 1927, Ludwig Fessler joined the 1887 paddler Luitpold in providing the lake services. In 1969, Luitpold made way for new motor tonnage.

Busy traffic from Prien in the summer months requires a frequent service with high-capacity motor vessels

Chiemsee is one of two Bavarian lakes with motor paddlers running alongside motor vessels

Although the immediate landscape is flat, the Alps rear up only a few miles from the southern shores of the lake.
